The problem with networking is, that not many people have been coached or trained how to network and as a result of that, they make a lot of mistakes. I want to share with you today, the 4 worst networking mistakes that you can make.
Hi I’m Rob Brown and I spend a lot of time coaching people on how to be better networkers.
If you want to make a big networking mistake don’t even think about it at all, be totally unprepared, walk into the wrong events, talk to the wrong people. You’ve done that and I’ve done it too. You’re in a conversation and you think why am I here – you are not the right person for me to be talking to. So get to the right events, talk to the right people and be a bit more strategic about what you are doing.
Its sell, sell, sell – its all about them – listen to me and how great my business is. The problem with that is that they are not learning about other peoples businesses and you are not going to make too many friends if you do all the talking.
You know a lot of people are networking but we live in a similar society where similar people are selling similar things to similar people for similar prices which all sound the same. So what you can you do to sound a little bit different, a little bit better, a little bit edgy to make yourself memorable, that’s a mistake you cannot afford to make otherwise, networking time is wasted time.
They go to all these events, spend all this time online and it’s a one hit, one night stand of a relationship. You are not going to sell to somebody like that and you are not going to form a relationship like that. You’ve got to follow up consistently, you’ve got to find ways to keep in touch with people.
If you can eradicate these four mistakes from your networking vocabulary – you are going to rise to the top very very quickly and I promise you you don’t need to do much to be in the top 5% of top networkers. So raise your game and have a great networking day.
